What Advents do I have?

I have a pair of Advent speakers, from the '70s I'd guess. Walnut cabs with beveled edge, simply says 'THE ADVENT SPEAKER' on the back, serial numbers A4-16210 and A4-16211. Orange tweeter behind a cage. Thanks in advance for any info -J!

1st gen large advent, made 1969 to sometime in 1977. I'd bet the woofers have masonite rings as well

The *very* earliest Advents actually had the tweeter's protective grill behind the grill cloth, and not on the tweeter itself. They also used a lighter gauge voice coil wire for the tweeter - they had brighter highs (from the lower mass voice coil) but they burned out more easily, and when you took off the grill cloth, there was nothing protecting the tweeter from curious fingers. Advent subsequently changed the design for obvious reasons, but continued to call the revised design the Advent Loudspeaker.
I don't know how many of those were made - I only saw them in Advent dealers during the very earliest days of the speaker. My Advents are of the later design.- Re: What Advents do I have? - J Harris08:23:37 08/30/05 (11)

The woofers have steel rings, not masonite, and the tweeter cage is attached to the tweeter itself.
So these are 'second generation Large Advents'? Probably made sometime between 1973 and 1977? Are they as desirable as the first generation? Sound differences?Best

There should be a date marked on the steel tweeter mounting plate. 1st generation ran from introduction in 1970 up to 1977. There are several variations within this model run. All the tweeters in this series have the actual orange cone/dome assy mounted on a Masonite panel which is mounted forward of the steel mounting plate and cocked at an angle to the steel plate. 2nd generation tweeters have no Masonite plate, and the orange cone/dome is mounted directly to the steel plate.
DavidLD pointed out that the corners of the grill frame are radiused on the 2nd gen and square on the first. The wood molding around the cabinet front is beveled on the 1st gen and radiused on the second.I'd be most interested in more details on your speakers, as I am trying to collect the details on the various configurations. Your A4-xxxxx serial numbers are also a bit different than the ones I have seen. Mine are A-xxxxx and in the 60,000 range from early 1973. Utility models with the vinyl cabinets use a U prefix. Anyone else have some S/N data?Jerry- Rounded grill corners, radiused edges, no date on tweeter frame - J Harris16:12:17 08/31/05 (1)

Rounded grill frame corners
Radiused edgesNo date marked on the steel tweeter frame - at least on the front - and it is flush with the baffle.A4 is in bold followed by the rest of the number. So I guess I second generation Advents made after 1977? Are these considered less desirable than the first ones? Are there any sound differences? Thanks to everyone for all the info -J!- Re: Rounded grill corners, radiused edges, no date on tweeter frame - Bold Eagle16:21:10 08/31/05 (0)

Sure enough those are 2nd generation Advents. Both are considered 'real' Advents by those of us who are worshippers of Henry Kloss, as only the first two generations used the Kloss 'fried egg' tweeter. There are some sonic differences. The 2nd gen. is brighter and the tweeter is more extended. In general, the Normal switch setting on the 2nd gen is about like Extended on the 1st. Arguments rage about which is better, but it's more a matter of taste than anything.

We need to see a photo I guess. All second gen veneered Advents have a speaker grille with rounded (radiused) not right angle corners. The corners of the grilles on 1st gen Advents are 90 degree angles. If you have the rounded corners you have 2nd gen, built after 1977.
However, this distinction cannot be made if the cabinets are vinyl rather than veneer.
First gen Advents look like this
http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Large-Advent-Speakers-in-Walnut-Enclosures_W0QQitemZ5802341092QQcategoryZ14991QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemI Believe these are second Gen in vinyl
http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Large-Advent-Speakers-Super-Sound_W0QQitemZ5797648722QQcategoryZ14993QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemHere is a second gen in veneer. Note the rounded grille corners, different from the 1st gen. Note also that the tweet sits back against the baffleboard rather than away, as 1st gen.http://cgi.ebay.com/ADVENT-LOUDSPEAKERS-VINTAGE-LARGE-GOOD-COND_W0QQitemZ5801350319QQcategoryZ14993QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemFinally, Here is another shot of 1st gen in veneer. Note how the tweeters differ
http://cgi.ebay.com/ADVENT-LARGE-SPEAKERS-ORANGE-TWEETERS_W0QQitemZ5800445274QQcategoryZ14993QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemThe woofer position on the baffleboard also differs between 1st and secon gen with thw woofer higher on the baffleboard in second gen.
In general, first gen Advents have woofers with the masonite rings. However, stories have been posted here indicating that very late in the 1st gen Advent started using the metal frame woofers. So there are probably some 1st gen Advents with square cornered grilles and non masonite woofers floating arount. These would date from early 1977 or perhaps late 1976.- BTW - E-Stat11:09:45 08/30/05 (6)

it takes only a bit of HTML to imbed those links. Replace '[' character with ' <' and ']' with '> '.

The second link is wrong, it should have been 2nd gen walnut.

Nope those are first gen as the grilles have square not rounded corners. They look just like mine here in the Living room, built Sept, 1973

FWIW, My September, 1973 units are identical to his, tweeter-wise. I wonder what year the grilles were added. obviously, before 1973.

Probably in mid or late 1971. The first issue of TAS in Jan 72 talked about breaking several tweeters from mishandling in their Double Advent article. My 1972 tweeters look like the '73's and '74's. I also have a 1970 tweeter with no cage and a different angle between the Masonite and the steel plates. And, yes, it does seem a bit brighter. But I also know that earlier models used a 4 ohm series resistor, not a 3 ohm like the later ones. Now it all fits!

No. 2:The AdventsHenryKloss was quite the figure in the American speaker business in the 1950s–1960s.After he left KLH, he went on to found Advent Corporation because he wanted tomanufacture and market large-screen two-piece television projection systems. Inorder to produce the cash flow needed for that undertaking, however, he decidedto make and sell speakers under the Advent name. This virtual “afterthought” wenton to become perhaps the most successful speaker brand of the early-mid 1970s,during the very height of the huge Baby Boom generation college populationexplosion.
Withtypical Kloss directness of purpose, he came out with just two models, simplycalled the Advent Loudspeaker and the Smaller Advent Loudspeaker. Both were 10”2-way sealed speakers, using in-house designed and built drivers. They differedmainly in size (the “Large” Advent was a full-sized bookshelf speaker, like theAR-3 or KLH Five); the Smaller Advent was a bit larger and more expensive thanthe AR-4x, but still much trimmer than the larger Advent. Kloss took the“dealer-as-partner” marketing strategy that he initiated when he was at KLH (hewas the “K”) to new heights with Advent. Advent dealers presented and soldtheir speakers with an almost fanatical, religious zeal. The Advents themselveswere certainly worthy of their success, great-sounding speakers that hadextraordinary bass response—especially considering their modest price—andrepresented terrific performance-to-price values. The Advents could be said tohave spearheaded the explosion of stereo’s popular jump from the hobbyist-onlymarket of the middle-aged “GE engineer living in Suburbia” during the mid-1960sto the 10-fold market increase of the Baby Boomer college kid/dorm roomexperience of the 1970s.
Advent speakers mainstreamed stereo to the masses.
As abonus to the amazing role Advent played in transforming stereo from a 1960sDad-only hobby to its 1970s mainstream popularity, somehow the idea of twospeakers per channel “stacked Large Advents” as a tower, driven as if they wereone speaker—achieved legendary audiophile status in the 1970s as well. All thehigh-end magazines accorded Stacked Advents some kind of mythical quality thatcouldn’t be explained by “the numbers” or even by Advent’s design personnel. This only added to the Advent lore of the 1970s, a brand reputation and story exceededby few, if any, products in any field.
